As previously mentioned this major industry in the U.S. is currently under review for possible imposition of additional import tariffs under Section 232. The investigation seeks to determine the impact of imports of cars, SUVs, light trucks and automotive parts on national security. Section 232 investigations could potentially impact material from all our trading partners, similar to the steel and aluminum tariffs.
American Shipper reported today that the Commerce Department has extended the time period for this review to provide more time for written comments, data and analyses. The comment period has been extended to June 29th, as well as requests to testify at hearings. The hearings will be conducted from 8:30 to 5 on July 19 and 20th.
Written submissions must be filed electronically through the Federal eRulemaking Portal and be addressed to the Section 232 Automobiles and Automotive Parts Investigation. More information can be found on the Commerce Department website.
