The Howard Street Tunnel Expansion

The Howard Street Tunnel Expansion

Yesterday marked a significant update regarding the long-awaited Howard Street Tunnel Project. The expansion along CSX’s I-95 rail will now allow trains to carry double-stacked shipping containers, opening the transportations lines to the Midwest.

The tunnel was built in 1895 and is only 18 inches less then the needed 21 feet that is necessary for a double-stacked train. The new expansion will have a major impact on Maryland’s economy, create thousands of jobs, and ultimately improve the flow of goods.

The expansion will also free up some of the congestion on the I-95 corridor. This expansion project will not just benefit the state of Maryland, but improve some major transportation issues.

The project is slated to be completed in 2024 and will cost 244 million to be paid by the state, federal government and CSX.
