This is a fourth follow-up to ongoing news regarding fees incurred for longstanding containers at the Ports of LA and Long Beach.

The official start date of the “Container Dwell Fee” proposed by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is being pushed back again; it will now start on Monday, Jan 10. The fee was initially reset to take effect on Nov 22, Nov 29, Dec 6, Dec 13, Dec 20, Dec 27 prior to this most recent update.

Since the fee was proposed, the ports have continued to see a noticeable decline (35%) in aging cargo waiting on the docks. Executive directors from both ports are continuing their practice of reassessing the fee implementation based on the progress of clearing congestion.

To reiterate the conditions of the Dwell Fee, it is set at $100 per container, and increases by an additional $100 per container per day of excess dwell time beyond the set dwelling limit. For containers scheduled to move by truck, ocean carriers can be charged for containers dwelling over nine days. Those containers moving by rail would be charged after a period of six days.
