Be advised that Republic of South Africa ports are on strike, effective today, October 6, due to breakdown in wage negotiations. This is a country-wide strike with devastating consequences for the movement of both inbound and outbound containers. Major service disruptions are anticipated resulting in backlogs and congestion for undetermined periods of time.
Currently all ports are closed and no cargo is being allowed into or out of the ports. We do not know if vessel berthing will take place as this is a very fluid situation. There are reports of cable theft which may cause train operations in certain areas to come to a halt.
There are indications that the Transnet authorities are seeking a legal interdict to stop the strike.
We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you appraised of any developments.
