U.S. Tariffs on Canadian Products in Response to U.S. Alcoholic Beverage & Motor Vehicle Trade Dispute.
On September 8, 2026, two proclamations were issued which adjust the scope of the 50% retaliatory tariffs currently applied to specific Canadian products:
- Modifying the Scope of Products of Canada Subject to the Additional Duties Imposed to Offset Canadian Discrimination Against the Commerce of the United States with Respect to Alcoholic Beverages
- Modifying the Scope of Products of Canada Subject to the Additional Duties Imposed to Offset Canadian Discrimination Against the Commerce of the United States with Respect to Motor Vehicles
The administration initially enacted these tariffs in July 2026 under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, citing unfair Canadian trade practices and discrimination against American alcoholic beverage & motor vehicle exports. The administration briefly paused these duties in August when Canada indicated a willingness to negotiate. However, the United States has since determined that Canada walked back on its commitments and stopped negotiating fairly, which prompted the White House to fully enforce the tariffs.
The latest proclamation updates the specific list of targeted goods by removing certain products from the penalty list while adding new ones. The product updates include a range of commodities, from rock salt and cement to ATVs and dairy products. It is critical to note that these adjustments go into effect in just few days on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
These actions reflect escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada. We recommend an immediate review of your supply chains and product classifications. Our trade compliance team is available if you have any questions.
